Finally I have been able to update my North Sea coast path travelogue reports. Just over a year ago, in January 2025, I travelled to the North Sea coast in the north of the Netherlands. In October 2024, I had walked along the west coast to Vlissingen in Zeeland, and before continuing further west abroad, I decided to first complete the North Sea coast in the Netherlands. This actually concerns the Wadden coast of the provinces of Friesland and Groningen in the Netherlands: the largest tidal area in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Wadden Sea. A coastal area with dykes and salt marshes where birds from all over the world come.
I planned a route consisting of two walking stages in Friesland, starting in Zurich on the Afsluitdijk and continuing via Harlingen and Pietersbierum to Sint Jacobiparochie, with three overnight stays for the weekend from Friday 17 to Monday 20 January 2025.
I was hoping for good winter weather, but arrived in a chilly fog that would persist throughout the weekend and limit the sea view on the Wadden Sea to 50-100 metres. In terms of photography, I focused on the kilometres of imposing sea dykes and breakwaters. I photographed the mudflats with their salt marshes and salt meadows, the vegetation on the shore: reed beds, dry grasses frosted with ice. On the wide asphalt layer of the kilometre-long Wadden Sea dyke, I often thought that I would return, but then on a bicycle, on my way to or from the German or Scandinavian North Sea coast. I didn't know then that I would be returning in August for a Wadden Sea cycle tour (https://theokamphuis.nl/wadden-sea-coast-trip). A test run of my equipment for North Sea trips abroad. I still have to make a number of North Sea coast path reports about that trip too.
For now, my North Sea project in terms of photography and reports has been worked out until January 2025 with the following trips:
