Pile heads with cormorants, Zoutelande, 2024

While looking for material to submit to an international black-and-white photography competition I came across this series of pier heads with cormorants in Zoutelande, Zeeland, the Netherlands. Photographed these pier heads during a coastal path walk in October 2024. 

Pier heads or beach heads are numerous on the North Sea coast in the province of Zeeland; the beaches there would be unthinkable without the single or double rows of posts. Breakwaters to prevent erosion of the beach and dunes. I have passed countless ones on my North Sea coastal path hikes. Always looking for a passageway with my camera backpack on my back, always looking for a different photographic angle, always hoping that the cormorants would stay put a little longer...
